HISTORY 38TH ARTILLERY
1. INTRODUCTION:
The establishment of the Combat Arms Regimental System throughout the Army, a complete departure from former organizational structures, resulted in the creation of many newly designated units, one of which is the 5th Howitzer Battalion, 38th Artillery. Under the new system each regiment retains its endowed history and honors, and each new color-bearing unit is entitled to its own history and honors, receiving in time a Certificate of Lineage and Honors.
The 38th Field Artillery Regiment was constituted on 5 July 1918 as a National Army unit assigned to the 13th Division. The regiment was organized 17 August 1918 at Camp Lewis, Washington.
After World War 1, the unit was placed on the inactive list of Regular Army until, October 1940, when it was reactivated at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and assigned to the Second Infantry Division.
During World War II, the 38th was one of the major artillery units of the 2d Infantry Division, participating in five campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. For their outstanding service during the Ardennes-Alsace campaigns, the 38th Artillery was cited in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army for service in Ardennes. It was again cited in the Belgian Orders for service on the Elsenborn Crest.
In August 1950, when the 2d Infantry Division replaced the 24th Division along the Naktong River, the 38th was again one of the major artillery units. During the UN Defensive, UN Offensive, and the CCF Intervention, the 38th provided artillery firers for the 38th RCT and Task Force Haynes.
The 38th Artillery supported the 38th Infantry, through seven campaigns: First UN Counteroffensive; CCF Spring Offensive; UN Summer Fall Offensive; Second Korean Winter; Korea; Summer Fall 1952; Third Korean Winter; Korea Summer Fall 1953.
For the Korean Service, the 38th Field Artillery Battalion was awarded the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation twice and the Distinguished Unit Citation. The unit?s colors are entitled to decoration streamers embroidered: HONCHON, NAKTONG RIVER LINE, KOREA.
On 4 March 1958, the 5th Bn 38 Arty less H.Q. & H.Q. Btry was again placed on the inactive list. Batteries A & B were added on 2 May 1960 and the Bn was reactivated as the 5th Howitzer Bn 38 Arty.
The 5th Howitzer Battalion 38th Artillery was reorganized under the ROAD conception 21 February 1963, and was re-designated 5th Battalion 38th Artillery. Under this reorganization, Batteries C and Service were constituted 21 February 1963, and the battalion changed from 105 Self-Propelled to 105 Towed Howitzers.

Cavalry Unit Calls for Support
2nd Lt. Harry Hunter uses a field telephone to call for additional support while under fire from the Viet Cong near Phu My, South Vietnam. Troops of the U.S. 1st Calvary Air Mobile Division and Vietnamese troops have been searching for Viet Cong for several days. The photo Rocky Mountain News of the solid in short sleeves was reported as Ron Schaffer from family and friends in 1965. I must have block that out of my mind, during my tour of Vietnam.
The Geneva Accords of 1954 temporarily divided Vietnam into two zones (the Communist north and the anti-Communist, US-supported south). Political and ideological opposition quickly turned to armed struggle, prompting the USA and other countries to commit combat troops in 1965. The Paris Peace Agreements, signed in 1973, provided an immediate cease-fire and signaled the withdrawal of US troops. Saigon eventually capitulated to the Communist forces on 30 April 1975.
